San Diego, California

San Diego Community Information

San Diego, California, is a major city with 1.3 million residents in southern California. It has long been one of the fastest growing cities in the country. The population of San Diego has doubled since 1970. It is situated on the Pacific coast, and it has long been home to major naval shipyards and bases.

History

The area now occupied by the San Diego metropolitan area was the home of the Kumeyaay people for many centuries prior to the arrival of European explorers in the 16th century. When Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived in the San Diego Bay area in 1542, he claimed the territory for Spain. In 1769, the Presidio and Mission of San Diego became the first European settlement in California. San Diego became a part of an independent Mexico in 1821. Following the Mexican-American War, the area became part of the United States of America.
