History
The extension of streetcar service to the area in 1905 spurred development. Public transit was further refined prior to the arrival of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Streetcar service to South Park continued until 1939.
Parks and Recreation
South Park residents enjoy the innumerable opportunities offered at Balboa Park. Exhibitions at the San Diego Museum of Art richly complement the pleasures of a day at the San Diego Zoo. Adjacent to the world-class zoo is the 1910 Balboa Park carousel. Fifteen museums and a performing arts center also operate within the confines of the park.

Avid golfers with South Park homes will enjoy that fact that they live only moments away from one of the most historic municipal courses in southern California. Balboa Park Golf Course includes 18 championship holes as well as a nine-hole executive layout. There's a complete pro shop, driving range and multiple practice putting greens. The par-72, 18-hole course measures 6,281 yards from the longest tees. The par-32 executive nine is 2,175 yards long.
Events
Love old houses and historic charm? Enjoy historic home and neighborhood tours at the Old House Fair, along with a Saturday street fair in mid-June every year in the area of 30th & Beech Streets. The fair is filled with antiques, artisans, builders, landscapers, architects, designers, arts, crafts, gardening and more.

Restaurants and retail shops in South Park collaborate to host South Park "walkabouts" that are held on a quarterly basis in March, July, October and December in the area of Kalmia & Beech Streets. A fun-filled quarterly festival to introduce you to the unique and independent boutiques, cafes, and taverns. Stroll through the neighborhood and enjoy special treats, deals and live entertainment.
South Park lights up the business community for the holiday season. The kick off is an evening tree lighting ceremony the Sunday after Thanksgiving at 6pm at Grape Square, Grape & 30th Streets.
